Use Data Or Be Used By Data!
The October 5 issue of Seotistics is here for you!
The last time we saw some nice workflows you can use in real time for your small website.
Well, I show you what else you can do and the latest news in the Web Analytics world :3
Nowadays you can have a better Analytics stack than your competitors just with common sense.
There are big changes coming ahead and 2027 will be THE year.
P.S. Go check my previous issues if needed, this is a sequel.
Please move this email to your Primary inbox or reply to it. This is to prevent Seotistics goes into spam by accident. Gmail users can read this tutorial to do it.
This section will probably move down in the future, new format so I have to decide yet haha
I will also add a summary graphic but I didn't have the time today π
Jev & Clef: Quick + Cheap Classification
Last issue I said I would get back to Jev and the new models, so here we go.
You may have heard of this Jev and it's nothing but a classifier and a good one at that.
Compared to when we started, now you can actually cluster keywords, pages and whatever with more accuracy and ease.
What sold me is the shape of the answer.
You give it a state plus a set of typed questions and you get probabilities back, never text.
An example visualized in Excel. Accuracy is quite high but some queries may be classified incorrectly.
Now Cloudflare's Clef apparently looks better on benchmarks but it doesn't really matter.
Clef landed on October 1 as their own take on the same idea, a 27B model plus a 9B flash version, both Apache 2.0 and both served on Workers AI.
Clef-flash answers in about 39 milliseconds at the median against Jev's 524.
It also wins 7 of the 10 published decision benchmarks.
β
It takes images too, which Jev doesn't, while the context window goes from 32K to 64K.
However, a few hundred milliseconds on a job that runs a few thousand times a month is not my bottleneck...
so I keep whichever model is cheaper!
The real news is that classification stopped being expensive.
Tagging queries, clustering pages and routing a workflow is now one cheap call with a calibrated answer
Tailnet & App
One of the most crucial things to learn with apps is basic security.
One solution is Tailscale, which creates an isolated net only accessible by the devices you approve.
For example, I can switch on the Tailnet VPN on my iPhone and access all my web products.
This isn't the only security measure you need but a good one to start.
The part I appreciate most is that it's one app icon on my phone.
I tap it and I'm inside everything I host!
Ultimate Dashboard
One of the most important things to do is... monitoring your website.
I was using Data Studio before but then realized the client for this stuff is myself and have 0 limits π
βEvidence.dev is one of the many ways you can use to create smooth dashboards.
I split it into multiple tabs and now I use it to check my website.
It's still WIP but since the only user is me, I can get away with a lot of stylistic choices.
One of the most useful parts is what I've recommended building since forever, a content inventory:
Data taken from WordPress, GA4 and GSC.
Oh and the entire dashboard runs flawless on my iPhone too!
iPhone view, quite smooth if you ask me. β The only issue is that the white box doesn't go away and that's a little bug on Evidence's side.
For sure, in bigger projects you will be forced to use one of the usual suspects: Looker, PowerBI, Tableau, Qlik.
In all the other cases, I recommend exploring alternatives like this one.
Data Engineering
Engineering-wise, the system is quite straightforward:
A quick summary for the technical people. Don't worry if you don't get it now, this is an EXTRA
This is the MOST important side of the project.
Everything lands in BigQuery first, like the GA4 linking, the GSC bulk export and WordPress data.
DataForSEO data is the only one I don't fully store since it's interesting on the spot. β Then Dataform does the transformation, staging first and marts after.
I also created a new dataset containing DataForSEO data about AI Overviews and WordPress metadata. Too strong!
The SQL lives in version control with tests on top, so a broken model fails loudly instead of quietly showing a wrong number. β βThe dashboard only reads the marts. β β This is the side of the project nobody posts about, because a screenshot of a mart isn't a screenshot of a chart.
The visible part is maybe 20% of the work and the other 80% is what keeps it real.
Cloudflare
If there is a company that surprised me in the last few years, that would be Cloudflare.
As I told you in my previous issues, they offer you very cheap storage (R2 object) which I already use to back up my VPS data daily.
On top of that, they recently added the possibility to deploy apps instantly with Workers.
β
You write a small function, push it and it goes live in 330+ cities with no server to patch.
The next issue will have cool stuff too but this one is really full of insights if you can replicate them :3
