Use Data Or Be Used By Data!
The September 7 issue of Seotistics is here for you!
It's always nice to go back to my previous content and see what changed.
This is very true for Analytics projects and technologies, involving LLMs.
You know people wanna get started but still use outdated tools or work on the wrong projects.
I made a similar issue back in March this year, it's cool to see how much changed!
P.S. I am working like crazy on new content, expect to see more this week.
Please move this email to your Primary inbox or reply to it. This is to prevent Seotistics goes into spam by accident. Gmail users can read this tutorial to do it.
If you have read my previous issues, you already know that I've covered a lot of examples and use cases.
For starters, there is no need to have something super complex.
A nice portfolio can be built with something basic in Claude, as long as it works and achieves something.
Then, you can always make it proper and use actual automation.
What Changed After 6 Months
The LLM landscape changed for sure, before I was recommending Claude and Gemini, now it's been months with Chinese models.
Fable 5.1 just released but its pricing is also prohibitive for most of us.
For context, you pay $50 per 1M token of output, whereas you pay infinitely less than $1 for cheap models.
And believe it or not, the output doesn't justify that price!
Most of the hype around Fable is from casual users OR people working on hard projects. In all the other cases, just pick the cheaper option first.
Hermes Agent also made its appearance recently, before people were using OpenClaw.
I never fell for the OpenClaw hype because the use cases were dumb but now... it's another story today with Hermes.
Just 6 months and all of this happened! Can you imagine staying out of the loop?
Web Apps & Deployment
If there is a thing I've always avoided back then was creating full-fledged apps.
It was so annoying to google one billion different services and libraries just to release something.
But now it's different π
You can have your own app in a day and replace paid tools.
Here is one of my most useful examples:
One of my latest beautiful infographics was produced via my custom app. Code + UI makes it much better than another paid tool.
The one for visuals is also related to the point below and it helps me a LOT.
Now... can you also think about other use cases?
You can extract all the data you need inside your app rather than using clunky tools.
You can even run your apps from the terminal as CLI apps. I will be posting more about it, don't worry!
As the months go by, I have to admit that app development is easier and easier.
Models are cheaper, better and it's undeniable that many organizations can just have simple internal tools.
You can even pay for a dedicated domain just to make your web apps public and available to everyone. β Make sure you have the right things before: HTTPS, proper security, never expose PII, etc.
Visuals & Dashboards
This is probably one of the most important projects if you want to communicate effectively.
Visuals can be expressed via dashboards or as standalone images.
They have completely different functions but you need both.
Just one example, this is for beginners. In reality dashboards are just one way to showcase results.
My advice didn't change: only keep ONE dashboard. Enterprises are exceptions but the same law apply... use as few as possible.
Speaking of which, Google recently released the opportunity to chat with your data on Data Studio...
which is nice but not really a differentiator.
BigQuery Agents... yes but they aren't as powerful as you think lol
Have a look at it for fun but in most cases you can't present this as a real project.
If you need to create single visuals, I don't even recommend Python but d3.js or Javascript in general.
They give you much more freedom and choices!
Scraping
Ok but why should I even bother with this stuff if I can use a tool like Screaming Frog?
Well, different use cases.
If you need to audit a website, Screaming Frog and Sitebulb are top tier choices, no discussion.
On the other end, if you need to actually retrieve the content for each page... that's a different story!
You need a dedicated tool that is fast enough and can be customized for your use cases.
Needless to say, LLMs help MASSIVELY with it.
Now I'd tell you to encapsulate this within n8n and/or Hermes Agent. More on this soon!
There are many modern options today, like crawl4ai, ScrapeGraphAI, Scrapling.
Even though scraping per se doesn't always involve AI, you can use AI on the output... β to analyze it!
All of them cover slightly different use cases.
A super interesting use case is also the following:
scrape info from Reddit
get the content in a nice .md format
analyze or summarize the results
get an actionable output (like what you need to write)
This project can also be used for self-learning, uh.
Scraping projects have always been the best for getting work.
Back then, I got my first job thanks to my sentiment analysis based on Twitter data about UK politics.
It wasn't even SEO related but this stuff was roaring before AI existed!
Automation
Before, I used to think n8n was a mid solution but after the latest updates... it's quite good!
Automation today is much easier thanks to tools like n8n indeed.
Go for self-hosted if you wanna practice, check the article in my resources to discover how to do it.
This is another quick win if you want to improve your portfolio.
The other component is the evergreen Hermes Agent, which is a real agent helping with all sorts of tasks.
It's close to impossible to use it in a corporate context but for your personal projects... it's HUGE.
Automation can also be related to the reporting layer, aka how do we get the right information out there.
An example from the Labs API (DataForSEO). Even retrieving data from an API and automating a process IS valuable.
This is a quick win for many companies who are currently working with UIs or subpar tools.
Even Beyond
If you've been following me on LinkedIn and/or my Discord community, you know that there are infinite use cases.
You can even start from one of the following:
β
Too many ask me about how to get started and the secret it... just break things.
AI can help you to learn faster by trial and error.
That's pretty much how I upskill by default, the only limit is your available time.
See you next week, I am still swamped by content work, use this issue to review your knowledge.
