Use Data Or Be Used By Data!β The July 3 issue of Seotistics is here for you! |
Today's issue will be focused on one of my favorite topics: speed! Analytical speed refers to the ability to generate quick and good insights and it's one of the best skills you can learn. SEO is generally considered a slow channel but that doesn't mean you have to delay decisions. Data can help you speed up the decisions you make. I want to show you why and how. Gmail users can read this tutorial to do it. πͺ Analytics > More EfficiencyIn an ever-changing industry like SEO, speed is all. We have already covered 2 big examples of how to use data in SEO. But you shouldn't get too hyped up about it either. Speed is good in the right context, in all the other cases it doesn't really mean anything. Content websites and publishers need to write a lot to have great results. And while some of you may say that quality is more important than quantity, in practice, you need both. But how can you produce more content then? The answer is with the right systems. So what do I usually do? π The Process Unveiled NowI define the steps below:
You don't need to follow my template but I'd recommend you to have a structured process in mind. With 1 and 2 you see what's going on and what is performing better in SEO terms. This stage finds useful patterns and checks what's helping your client get traffic or money. 3 and 4 are for the future, this is where you help them to unveil fruitful opportunities. Be careful though, your suggestions must be compatible with how they work. If you ignore this warning, they won't be able to do what you say.Β¨ 5, 6 and 7 are all about action and consistency over time. π The Key Lies In The PresentSteps 3 and 4 allow you to see if there's any room for improvement, such as:
You look at data and tie meaningful insights to actions you can take. The important here is the process and not the outcome. You can get lucky once, but you want a solid process that lets you win consistently. With all of this, you can save hundreds of hours between waiting and relying on your gut. Prevention is always better than repairing damage, especially in SEO. Make decisions and take action now for a better tomorrow. π What the current "SEO" literature tells youMany of the SEO articles out there recommend you use data. The thing is that data alone isn't worth it. I always noticed a discrepancy between what we do and what's implemented. This is something I've discovered recently and is allowing me to improve. The mainstream advice looks like this:
But this isn't enough to succeed with data, you need to be grounded in reality. What we really care about is how SEO can impact other people. This isn't about Product or Project Management, I am merely talking about Analytics and common sense. π¨ Examples of "Speed"The idea is to take action faster. Given a scenario and some unknowns, you want to know what's the most optimal course of action. You won't probably get the best one, but the most optimal based on your information. And in decision-making, timeliness may be crucial. Let's say a Core Update hit your website and you have to update your articles... You'd ask yourself:
When you lose traffic, it's not always possible to find the causes, so you generate many likely hypotheses. Analytics won't help you test them BUT... It will let you move fast, fast, and even faster. You don't need to know every small detail to move forward, that's a good fact to know. (Oh wait, I talked about all of this in issue #2) By analyzing data, you can spot the problematic sections and plan some actions. SEO is quite boring because it's always the same On-Page improvements. We are quite lucky indeed! Search Console and Analytics can also tell you what to improve so you can do much better than before. β οΈ SEO Is Still SEOThere is no need to revolutionize SEO until Google will change the rules. Analytics is another discipline that can help SEOs in their daily work. You still need a vision, some budget and a good staff. Magic tools and witchcraft won't make you rank tomorrow. For this reason, it's important to get your priorities right and then test as much as you can. 𧡠My Selection Of Twitter ThreadsA quick recap for those who haven't read them all or need a refresher:
